The Best Healthy Ramadan Recipes to Whip Up For Your Next Iftar

Impress the in-laws with these delicious dishes.

The best Ramadan Iftar recipes to try tonight

The best Ramadan Iftar recipes to try tonight

Thinking up new Iftar recipes night after night is no easy feat, especially if you have a revolving door of guests coming through your home during Ramadan.
In need of kitchen inspiration, we turned to one of our favourite chefs, Zahra Abdalla, whose famous book Cooking With Zahra has become our go-to guide for both traditional and modern Middle Eastern cuisine.
Here are our top two healthy and meat-free recipes – so there’s no need to make something separate for veggie guests.

Roasted Cabbage with Lemon and Tahini Sauce

Roasted cabbage with lemon and tahini sauce

Roasted cabbage with lemon and tahini sauce

“Roasted cabbage with lemon and tahini sauce is a delicious, healthy and vegan dish that I love serving at my dinner parties. I usually like to serve it with some roast chicken, or it can be served as a simple and light meal on its own,” says Zahra. “Every time I prepare this at one of my dinner parties; my guests always leave asking for the recipe.”

Ingredients: Serves 4 – 6

  • ½ head of cabbage
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Olive oil

Lemon and tahini sauce:

  • 1 cup tahini paste
  • 2 lemons, juiced
  • 2/3 cup water
  • ¼ tsp chilli powder (optional)
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Garnish:
1 cup mixed sprouts, for garnish

1. Preheat oven at 200°C. Cut half a head of cabbage into 6 or 8 equal-sized wedges, cutting through the core and stem end. Arrange the wedges in a single layer on a baking sheet. Season with salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil. Flip the cabbage wedges and do the same on the other side.

2. Bake the cabbage for 20 – 30 minutes, flipping halfway through. Roast until tender and golden-brown.

3. To make the sauce, combine the tahini paste and lemon juice in a small bowl. Slowly add the water to this, whisking until the sauce has a light, creamy consistency. Season with chilli powder, sea salt and pepper.

4. Serve the roasted cabbage on a platter and top with a drizzle of the lemon and tahini sauce, and garnish with mixed sprouts. Serve hot or cold.

Kookoo Sabzi Mixed Herb Frittata

“Usually this dish is fried,” explains Zahra. “However, as a healthier alternative, I bake it like a cake and slice it before serving. This dish is delicious when served hot or cold.”

Ingredients: Serves 6 – 8
  • 8 eggs
  • 2 cups fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 2 cups fresh coriander, finely chopped
  • 1 cup fresh green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 cup fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 1 cup fresh dill, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp barberries (optional)
  • ¼ cup walnuts, roughly chopped (optional)
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper powder

1. Preheat oven at 180°C.

2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the eggs until well beaten. Then add parsley, coriander, green onions, chives, dill, flour, barberries, walnuts, olive oil, salt and black pepper powder, and mix well until fully combined.

3. Pour the batter into a greased ovenproof skillet or cake pan and bake for 45 minutes.

4. Remove from oven and set aside to cool. Cut into small pieces and serve with baked salmon and sabzi polo.

Brought to you by the team behind the wildly popular Din Tai Fung located in Mall of the Emirates, this new brand culinary opening certainly lives up to the hype.

Tagging itself as “a modern Chinese and Asian fusion gastropub and restaurant”, Han Shi Fu can be found inside Aloft City Centre Deira, a hip movie-themed hotel on Dubai Creek.
Insta-snappers will be spoilt for choice when it comes to the interiors – think vibrant neon-toned lighting, oversized Chinese scrolls hanging from the ceiling and an entire wall splashed with cool ceramics.

A fusion of bold flavours, the menu is just as playful as the décor, taking inspiration from trendy street food favourites found across the world, from Taipei to Hong Kong, Shanghai and even New York.
Our highlights included the spicy beef sirloin hot pot and matcha green tea velvet cake, washed down with an array of quirky colourful cocktails.

The healthy-minded can opt for the chicken lettuce wraps, wok-charred fresh cauliflower and roasted wild mushroom with yuba – all of which are on the lower end of the calorie-spectrum but still brimming with taste.

The best burgers to try in Dubai

A definitive guide to the UAE’s best burgers

We try to follow a ‘clean’ diet most of the time, but after a week of low-calorie lunches, post-workout green juices and energy ball snacks, we’re craving a good ol’ juicy burger once the weekend hits. Well, life is all about balance, right?
The real question is, where can one find the ultimate cheat day meal? While we’re all for feasting at classic fast food joints, we’ve recently stumbled across a few alternatives that offer a fresh take on our favourite indulgences.
From loaded double patties to extra cheesy creations, our round-up of tasty stacked buns will satisfy all your carnivore cravings. We’ve also tracked down the best veggie burger the region has to offer for our plant-based diet pals.
Word of warning – this list will leave you feeling very hungry…

Brunswick Eastery.Bar.Terrace

Brunswick Eatery.Bar.Terrace in Dubai

Brunswick Eatery.Bar.Terrace in Dubai

Tucked away inside the Sheraton Dubai Mall of the Emirates, this crowd-pleasing spot ticks all the right boxes for a casual feast with family or friends.
The industrial-chic setting, seasonal fuss-free menu and live streaming of the biggest sports games have helped make this one of the most popular spots in town. After a recent revamp, there are now three different dynamics within the space – a cocktail bar, a main dining area and a pretty plant-filled terrace.
We highly recommend ordering one of their delicious burgers, made using organic Australian minced beef. The Shopshire blue burger is guaranteed to impress, but our personal bun of choice is the excellent triple cream brie burger.
Veggies are also catered for with a crispy grain burger that comes with a mix of Puy lentils, quinoa, mushrooms and buckwheat, topped with purple cabbage and vegan mayo – yum.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen

Located inside City Centre Mirdif, GBK is a long-standing favourite among die-hard burger fans.
The perfect pitstop for a speedy pre- or post-cinema bite, the grub is cooked and served quickly but is by no means fast food as you may know it. All dishes are crafted using top-notch ingredients, including 100% prime Australian Angus beef and farm fresh veggies.
A few must-try buns include the hot smoked BBQ, the wagyu cheese with beef bacon (those with an appetite can make it a double-patty) or the trio of mini burgers if you fancy sampling three different varieties. Other menu highlights include the tasty Cajun chicken and lamb burgers.

T.G.I. Fridays

A family friendly meal choice at T.G.I. Fridays in the Middle East

T.G.I. Fridays is a delicious choice for the whole family

One of the best places to eat out with kids, T.G.I. Fridays is a top pick for a family-friendly feast. The relaxed eatery has several outposts located across the region, including Mall of the Emirates, Mall of Egypt, City Centre Deira and City Centre Bahrain.
The cowboy triple meat is the real deal when it comes to big burgers, and will arrive to your table topped with tender pieces of BBQ beef rib meat, fresh lettuce, tomatoes, melted cheddar cheese, roasted beef bacon, horseradish sauce and crispy frizzled onions. It’s well worth the meat sweats you’ll experience after munching your way through this colossal bun!

If you can’t decide between a plate of eggs or a bun, go for a dish that combines the two – the hangover burger. As the name suggests, it’s the ideal meal after a big one the night before.

Platters are overflowing with tender grilled meats, bowls of creamy hummus, heaps of mezze filled with fresh tabbouleh and stuffed pastries, and do not get us started on our love of halloumi – we could wax lyrical about our appreciation for all things Middle Eastern-menu related.

But for this purpose, we will keep it brief and merely list three of the best Arabic Restaurants in Dubai and Beirut you must try throughout Ramadan this year.

Celebrate Ramadan with the best Arabic Restaurants in Dubai

Get ready for an Iftar to remember with our guide to the best restaurants in Dubai and Beirut

AL Halabi

This favourite restaurant located in Mall of the Emirates attracts the masses for good reason – the menu is extensive, diverse and brimming with classic dishes, such as hot and cold mezzes, meat, fish fillets, kebbeh, fragrant soups and much more.

The mixed grill is an AL Halabi house specialty and a real standout on the foodie front, as are the lamb chops, which are so tender the meat will fall-off-the-bone and melt in your mouth – need we say more!

If you have any space left over for dessert, we highly recommend the homemade Baklava pastries.

From grilled shish taouk topped with garlic sauce and crispy French fries to fresh fattoush salads, a burger seasoned with shawarma spices and more mezze than you could eat in a lifetime, the food at Ahwak is some of the best we have tried in town.

Even the breadbasket here is a meal in itself, packed high with puffed-out pita, which is continuously replenished throughout your meal.

If you fancy a little something sweet with your coffee, opt for a bowl of freshly cut fruit or forgo the more indulgent route and order the chocolate-dipped dates.

Abd el Wahab

Abd el Wahab at City Centre Mirdif

You might be expected to wait for a table throughout popular Iftar timings, but trust us when we tell you it will be so worth it when you try the food at Abd el Wahab.

While nearly every dish we have tasted here has been far above average, the chicken fatteh, falafel platter and shawarmas are the real draws.

Go with an appetite as the portions are not only generous but too tasty to resist and you may end up over-ordering!

The little ones will love eating out at these fun and tasty venues.

The best restaurants for children

From Neapolitan-style pizzas to all-you-can-eat stacks of pancakes, we reveal the very best places to fill up hungry bellies at malls across Dubai and the wider Middle East.

Whether you’re looking for a quick pit stop to grab a bite on the go or a sit-down feast with the whole family, these venues offer something to suit all occasions and taste buds.

Bon appetite!

The Cheesecake Factory

This popular American important attracts the masses, and for good reason – The Cheesecake Factory Dubai’s menu is vast, as is the restaurant space, which overlooks the snowy slopes of Ski Dubai at Mall of the Emirates. Despite the sprawling size, the décor is warm and cosy with big banquet booths, amber lighting and more than enough seating options to suit your group.

Foodie highlights (and be prepared as portions are huge) include the spicy buffalo chicken bites, crispy crab wontons, California guacamole salad, and famous factory salad, while the little ones will love the roadside sliders and mini corn dogs from the children’s menu.

There is also a glass display cabinet by the entrance displaying a seemingly never-ending array of specialty cheesecakes, so don’t even think about not sneaking in a slice – it will be well worth the calories.

The Cheesecake Factory is located at Mall of the Emirates.

IHOP

As the name would suggest the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) is THE place to get a great stack of pancakes. Aside from golden pancakes topped with everything from blueberry compote to white chocolate chips, the casual eatery also serves up a broad selection of breakfast bites, juicy burgers, melted sandwiches and quesadillas. If you fancy taking the healthier route, opt for one of the fresh salads loaded with greens, grilled lean meats or the soup of the day.

While the menu is already super child-friendly, there is also a specialised kiddie section with create-a-face pancakes, mac ‘n’ cheese and chicken strips.

IHOP is located at Mall of the Emirates and City Centre Bahrain.

6 Arabic Restaurants You Must Try

Some of the best Arabic restaurants in Dubai are found at City Centre Mirdif. From fine dining to fast food, you’ll find great eateries that provide quality Arabic and Middle Eastern fare - all in one place. Whether you need a quick bite, or are in the mood for a slow and indulgent meal, the following restaurants are great places to hang out.

Abd El Wahab Restaurant
Named after its original location in Beirut, Abd El Wahab treats diners to the luxury of Lebanese hospitality. It’s a nice spot to relax and enjoy a shisha with good food and drinks. The menu features traditional mezze and unique Arabic delicacies like shanklish (aged pungent goat cheese with parsley, pepper and tomato), chicory salad (dandelion leaves cooked in olive oil and topped with caramelized onions), and hommus with fried pine nuts.

KÖŞEBAŞI
Pronounced koshe-bashi, this award-winning grill serves the traditional recipes of Southern Anatolia. KÖŞEBAŞI has been recommended by the Conde Nast Traveler and TIME for their juicy and fragrant mezzes, kebabs, and pizzas done in true Turkish style. The meat is slowly cooked over an open grill fired with charcoal, lending it a characteristic smoky flavor.

Leila Dubai
If you're craving some Lebanese comfort food, Leila gives you what you need. From starters and soups to pizzas and platters, Leila serves unpretentious fare in a simple and elegant setting. It's a great place to take your friends and family for lunch.

Al Farooj
Quick and satisfying, Al Farooj is a convenient stop for those mid-shopping hunger pangs. Their Western and Arabian fast food feature grilled chicken prepared with their secret recipe. Al Farooj also has a range of shawarmas inspired by the flavors of different cuisines, including Indian, Mexican, Lebanese and Italian.

Leil Nhar
Leil Nhar means ‘night and day' - a meaning reflected in their quirky, cartoony logo. Despite the name, the fare isn’t wholly Arabian but a mix of Lebanese, Turkish, and Continental.  They also have a breakfast menu of hearty fried eggs with a choice of toppings to get you through those hectic mornings. Leil Nhar’s highlight is their affordable pricing, so come here if you want a good meal that goes easy on your pocket.

Hatam
Throw your diet out the window and head over to Hatam, an eatery that specializes in the robust flavors of Iranian cuisine. The menu tempts diners with a selection of slow-cooked meats – like zereshk polo ba-morgh (baked chicken in tomato paste), chellow khorosht badengan (lamb, fresh tomato and eggplant cooked in a lemon paste), and joojeh kabab ba-ostokhan (chicken on the bone, marinated in saffron, lemon, and pure olive oil). Hatam is the perfect place for a hearty dinner with friends and family.
Arabic or European, simplicity or indulgence, a quiet solo lunch or a noisy night out – there is an eating place for everyone here at City Centre Mirdif.

Alice in Wonderland’s Tea Party!

The magic of Lewis Carroll’s classic: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is delighting children and adults as the ‘Alice in Wonderland Tea Party’ music and dance show are making their first-ever UAE appearance at Deira and Mirdif City Centre this DSF.

A special Tea Party Event was hosted for the community at Mirdif City Centre last night, with special guests from children from Senses Centre and the Dubai Women and Children’s Foundation. Filled with fun surprises, including gifts from Hamley’s toy store and Mirdif City Centre, kids and families were filled with laughter as they were whirled away into Alice’s magical Wonderland.

Set against a beautiful fantasy wonderland filled with bright, colourful flowers and magical mushrooms, lovely little Alice begins with a melodic song, welcoming all to ‘her Wonderland’. Alice is soon joined by the permanent grins of the Chesire Cat, the nervous White Rabbit and The Hatter who spread the joys of laughter, happy days and smiling as they perform a fun song and dance in preparation for the Tea Party. The excitement is almost spoiled as the mean-hearted Queen of Hearts threatens to steal away the Teapot, but instead poisons Alice’s cup of tea, putting a wicked spell on her voice! To break the spell, the Chesire Cat, White Rabbit and The Hatter invite kids from the audience on-stage to spell the magical word, helping Alice find her voice again and joining in with her musical friends to turn the Queen of Hearts’ frown, upside down.

This exciting show continues at Mirdif City Centre until January 18th with three, 30 minute shows daily at 4:30pm, 6:30pm and 9:30pm.

Next week, ‘Alice in Wonderland Tea Party’ brings its whimsical experience to City Centre Deira from January 21st – 30th with three daily shows at 4:30pm, 6:30pm and 9:30pm, plus other Wonderland activities including Meet & Greet sessions and themed arts & crafts. This all-new musical story will take the audience on a fantasy adventure in Wonderland.

During DSF, Deira & Mirdif City Centre are giving away a Grand Prize of a trip to anywhere in the world, with any AED 300 spend. Shoppers can also play the ‘Wonderland’ interactive game, which allows users to step into City Centre’s own ‘Wonderland’ and collect objects using sensory image motion technology for the chance to win up to AED 1,000 daily from January 2nd-15th at City Centre Deira, Jewelry Court and from January 20th-Feb 2nd at Mirdif City Centre, Central Galleria.
